Biography

Dr Andy Franklyn-Miller began his involvement in International sport as a Rowing Coach. He coached crews to success at Henley Royal Regatta winning the Princess Elizabeth Cup in 1994 and then with the Great Britain team and Imperial College, London and laterally at Scotch College in Melbourne Australia.

He began his medical training at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School and graduated in 1998 and completed his GP training in 2005. He has been Team Doctor for a variety of National Governing body sports and professional teams.

In 2004-2006 he was Team Doctor to the Men’s Great Britain Rowing team and then moved to Melbourne, Australia to work at the world-renowned centre, Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre, under the tutorship of Assoc. Professor Peter Brukner.

Here he was also appointed an Honorary fellow at Centre for Health, Exercise and Sports Medicine as part of the University of Melbourne and had the great opportunity to be guided in research by Professor Paul McCrory and took on the role of Team Doctor in 2007 -2008 for Melbourne Storm Rugby League Club.

He is also Lead Team Doctor for the England U16 Rugby team, remains Medical and Sports Performance consultant for Melbourne Storm and sees patients from a variety of professional sports in the UK.

On a day-to-day basis he works at the Centre for Human Performance at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court. Surrey, London and is collaborating with colleagues across the World on a variety of research topics.

He has published widely on Sports Medicine, example of a recent paper, The Gluteal Triangle: A clinical patho-anatomical approach to the diagnosis of gluteal pain in athletes, and is currently co-writing his first book: "Clinical Sports Anatomy" – to be published in Spring 2010 by McGraw-Hill, Australia.

He continues to present internationally and recent topics include;

  • "Posterior thigh pain – cutting edge advances” – British Association of Sports and Exercise Medicine, Loughborough 2009
  • " The strain patterns of the deep fascia of the lower limb” – World Congress of Fascia Research, Amsterdam 2009
  • "Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndrome – a review of the literature and novel methodology "– Irish Faculty Meeting of Sports and Exercise Medicine, Dublin 2009
  • " Reduction of lower limb injuries in a military population” – Staffordshire Congress on Biomechanics 2009

His special interests are physiological preparation including altitude and recovery from training, performance preparation of athletes, rehabilitation of injury and the diagnosis of exercise related lower limb pain and groin, gluteal and hip pain. He is also preparing a thesis for submission for PhD on lower limb injury prevention in athletes.
